About the Speaker
As a teenager, Devon Noel Lee began capturing and preserving her family history by interviewing her grandmother and sending letters to an aging family record keeper. Throughout her college years, serious research was limited due to time and financial constraints, so Devon focused on digitally preserving the photos and stories possessed by her living relatives. Once online research became readily available, Devon made discoveries and connections the family genealogists had never dreamed of. By 2012, Devon’s living ancestors had all passed away taking their stories with them. Due to the perishable nature of these resources, Devon stresses the importance of starting family history research by preserving photos and stories.
Currently, Devon’s focuses on three families in Ohio: the German Geiszlers who settled in Columbus; the orphaned Townsend children, originally from Maryland, who settled in Madison, Franklin County; and the John Sparks and Elizabeth Weekly family from Licking County.
In 2009, Devon started the blog ‘A Patient Genealogist’ to share her discoveries with her mother who lived 1,000 miles away. The platform has expanded to include instructional posts on beginning research, writing a family history, beginner photography, and scrapbooking. Devon has written three how-to books: Power Scrapbooking: Get Caught Up, No Matter Your Scrapbooking Style; Create a Family History Scrapbook in 12 Easy Steps; and 21st Century Family Historian. This year, she released her personal memoir: From Metal to Rhinestones: The Quest for the Crown. All books are available through Amazon.com. Not only is Devon a former teenage beauty queen, but she also served as an editorial writer for the pageant website ‘Turn For the Judges’.
Devon graduated Texas A&M University with degrees in Marketing and Journalism. Currently, Devon is a home educator for five children in elementary, middle school, and high school.
