    The following note was included in George Hagle's discharge papers: "I certify that I have carefully examined the said Geo. W. Hagle of Capt Mabry's Comp and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of a broken knee the capsular ligaments were grotesquely lacerated leaving the joint weak and subject to dislocation. The limb is painful under any exertion and the bone is diseased, the fragment is not perfectly united." Signed by a surgeon with the surname Smythe.

    When George Hagle was discharged from service in the Confederate Army, he was described as being, "...40 years of age, five feet seven inches high, light complexion, blew [sic] eyes, dark hair, and by occupation when enlisted a farmer."
