SUMMARY:DGS Summer Seminar 2023 - Cyndi Ingle
DESCRIPTION:“Genealogy and the Internet: Successfully Mining the World Wide Web”\nSpeaker: Cyndi Ingle\nGenealogy and the Internet – A Match Made in Heaven – The Internet was made for genealogy. It really was. All the cool things we can do online make our life much easier and our research more productive: searching\, sharing\, publishing\, and more. But the Internet is also filled with pitfalls that hinder us: searching\, sharing\, publishing\, and more. The trick is to learn to be savvy about using all the online tools available to us to make this truly a match made in heaven. \nCyndi’s List in Practice – Sometimes overwhelming to beginners and sometimes underused by veterans\, Cyndi’s List is a research tool that is robust with resources helpful in everyone’s research. Using specific examples for beginners\, as well as more advanced researchers\, we will explore the site and point out how to make the most of the categories and the links found within. \nThe Path to Digital Libraries and Archives – Today every nook and cranny of the Internet is filled with hidden gems in digital library and archive collections. Often part of a special project or a larger web site\, these collections aren’t always easy to find and explore. We will discuss methods for locating them and\, once found\, methods for using them to answer specific research questions. \nSmarter Searching: Refining Search Parameters for Genealogists – Are you still using only the basic search options available on your favorite genealogical research sites? Do you get a lot of less-than-helpful search results? We will explore features and strategies. \n\nRecordings of each session will be available to registered attendees from July 22\, 2023 through August 6\, 2023.

SUMMARY:2024 HCGS Spring Seminar with Kelvin L. Meyers
DESCRIPTION:Join us live on Saturday\, May 18\, 2024\, at the genealogy library in Sulphur Springs or online via Zoom for the 2024 HCGS Spring Seminar. \n  \nKelvin L. Meyers\, a professional genealogist and avid researcher-historian\, will be our speaker.\n \n\nWith or Without Land: Using Land Records to Find Your Texas Ancestor – Because Texas was allowed to keep her public lands upon joining the United States\, there are a myriad of ways our ancestors could acquire land.\nWhy did Scarlett Make a Dress of her Mother’s Drapes? – “Nothing is certain but death and taxes.” However\, death happens only once\, but taxes must be paid every year. This makes tax records an important resource for genealogist. These records can sometimes provide information about birth\, death\, and marriage and can help separate two men of the same name. Tax records may even help you identify the owner of your enslaved ancestor.\nProbate More Than a Will – Understanding the law in regard to inheritance\, especially of land\, is an important tool for interpreting records\, especially in intestate estates. Knowing the law at the time our ancestor lived is paramount in understanding relationships based on inheritance of land.\nAre the Records Really Lost? – When you find you are dealing with a record loss\, no matter the cause\, you must look at the remaining records with fresh eyes and new angles.
