A graduate of Louisiana State University\, Ms. Wilkins has been actively researching family history since 1998\, specializing in African American research. \n  \nSession information: \nBlack and White Families in Southern Plantation Records\nSouthern antebellum plantation records can offer valuable insights into both white and African American families. This session explores how these records are organized\, how to search them\, and how to use correspondence\, business papers\, and other documents to uncover family connections and historical context. Case studies will show how the records document a white Southern family directly and an African American family indirectly. \nMysterious Relatives\nWho is that unknown person in the household\, or the “cousin” signing a family letter? This session looks at how cluster research can help identify mysterious people and clarify their relationship to your family. \nReconstructing Communities Using Sanborn Maps\, Census Records\, and City Directories\nReconstructing neighborhoods can reveal rich details about an ancestor’s daily life and surroundings. This session demonstrates how to use Sanborn maps\, census records\, and city directories to rebuild communities in Google Maps. \nSources for Researching Rural Ancestors\nDid your ancestor come from a small town or unincorporated community? This session covers records and tools for researching rural families\, including census and land records\, maps\, rural directories\, newspapers\, and modern mapping methods.

DESCRIPTION:Session Information\n\nA Revolutionary War Case Study: Begin with the Organizations – This case study will follow the course of one revolutionary soldier\, that captures the experiences of most of our ancestors who served. It begins with the organization of military units in the Revolutionary War. The subsequent lectures in the seminar will each focus in depth on a different aspect of the American fight for independence.\nRecords created by the War – This lecture will examine types of service\, compiled military service records\, and where other documents can be found using a step-by-step methodology in a case study.\nRecords created after the War: Pensions – This lecture will explain the types of pensions\, pension law\, pension application files\, pension ledgers\, pension payment vouchers\, last and final payments.\nRecords created after the War: Bounty Land – This lecture will cover the history of state and federal bounty land\, French and Indian War bounty land during the Revolutionary War\, bounty land acts\, and the bounty land process. It will reveal the information to be found in Bureau of Land Management website relating to military bounty land.
