DESCRIPTION:Houston Genealogical Forum presents Pamela Boyer Sayre\, CG\, FUGA and Rick Sayre\, CG\, CGL\, FUGA at their March 2017 Seminar. \nAbout the Program\nSaturday\, March 18 \n\nChats and Snacks: 9:00 am\nProgram: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm\n\nCapital Treasure (2-hour session with Pam & Rick Sayre) \nThis presentation features four brief case studies that demonstrate the wealth of records that can be found in the Washington\, DC area or on websites of repositories such as the National Archives\, Library of Congress\, Bureau of Land Management General Land Office\, National Park Service\, and Civil War Trust. Cases show how to find records of birth\, marriage\, and death for a burned county in which all such records were destroyed; how to learn how a Civil War veteran was shot to death in his old age; how to locate detailed facts about a person’s life from a simple land record; and why numbers of Union Civil War soldiers are buried at a site far from where they fell. \nOhio and Western Pennsylvania Research (Rick Sayre) \nFor many immigrants Pennsylvania was their landing pad; many moved west and many moved into Ohio. Two states\, side by side\, but so different in records and research approaches. Learn how to navigate research in this area making the most of online resources. Special attention will be paid to western Pennsylvania resources and to Ohio’s convoluted land history. \nAbout the Speakers\nPamela Boyer Sayre\, CG\, FUGA\, is a professional researcher\, educator\, author\, and lecturer. She has developed\, coordinated\, and taught courses at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research since 2007. She co-coordinates and teaches in the Researching in Washington\, DC\, without Leaving Home and the advanced land course at Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy and the advanced land course at Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh. She has taught in Boston University’s Professional Certificate Program in Genealogy. Pam is former NGS director of education and publications\, former board member of NGS and FGS\, co-author of Online Roots: How to Discover Your Family’s History and Heritage with the Power of the Internet (2003) and Research in Missouri (1999\, 2007)\, former FGS FORUM Digitools columnist\, and a former editor of APGQ. She is a popular seminar presenter who has spoken at genealogy conferences and seminars nationwide and on international cruises. \nRick Sayre\, CG\, CGL\, FUGA\, is a long-time researcher and instructor in genealogical topics. He coordinates the Using Maps in Genealogy course at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research\, and instructs in the Advanced Methodology\, Techniques and Technology\, and Advanced Military courses. Rick co-coordinates the advanced land and Researching in Washington\, DC\, without Leaving Home courses offered by the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) and the advanced land course at Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP). Rick co-coordinates with Judy Russell\, JD\, CG\, CGL\, the Law School for Genealogists at GRIP and the FHL Law Library course at SLIG. He also lectures at national conferences and presents nationwide seminars. His areas of expertise encompass records of the National Archives\, the Bureau of Land Management\, and the Daughters of the American Revolution\, including military records\, land records\, using maps in genealogy\, urban research\, and government documents. How to trace family members through the Congregation of Bohemian Freethinkers will be addressed and introduction to sets of records you might not be aware exists. Questions and comments will be invited after presentation.\n“Czech Songs in Texas\, from Old World to New” Frances Barton has a degree in American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin where she also studied music. Her father is Rev. Josef A. Barton whose ancestors emigrated from Vsetin in northeastern Moravia. She will discuss the history of several songs with Czech lyrics that are popular in the state. She will be joined by musicians Jubilee Barton and Steve Curtis.\n“Preserving Family Treasurers” Linda Reynolds\, Director of the East Texas Research Center (ETRC) at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) in Nacogdoches\, Texas since 2007 and a Certified Archivist since 2008. She has been searching for her ancestors since she was 12 years old and followed her grandmother around with a tape recorder asking lots of questions about the family. Her passion is sharing her knowledge of the preservation of family treasures so that future generations will have access to them. The ETRC collects\, preserves\, and provides physical and virtual access to East Texas’ unique cultural history.\n\nA sales table will feature Czech gift items and TCGS-published research books (including new publications covering the Frydek-Mistek and Vsetin areas)\, and a silent auction will be held.

DESCRIPTION:Discover History for Yourself \nThe Waco-McLennan County Library Genealogy Center\, in cooperation with the Central Texas Genealogical Society\, will host the 16th Annual Genealogy Lock-in in celebration of Family History month. \nThis state-wide initiative to provide educational and research opportunities for family historians takes place on October 21 from noon-10:40 pm. at the West Waco Library & Genealogy Center (5301 Bosque Blvd.\, Suite 275\, Waco\, Texas). \nEarly registration for the Lock-in begins at 11:45 a.m. in the foyer at the West Waco Library & Genealogy Center. Other library facilities will not be available for use after 6:00 p.m. during the Lock-in.
