DESCRIPTION:Discover History for Yourself \nThe Waco-McLennan County Library Genealogy Center\, in cooperation with the Central Texas Genealogical Society\, will host the 16th Annual Genealogy Lock-in in celebration of Family History month. \nThis state-wide initiative to provide educational and research opportunities for family historians takes place on October 21 from noon-10:40 pm. at the West Waco Library & Genealogy Center (5301 Bosque Blvd.\, Suite 275\, Waco\, Texas). \nEarly registration for the Lock-in begins at 11:45 a.m. in the foyer at the West Waco Library & Genealogy Center. Other library facilities will not be available for use after 6:00 p.m. during the Lock-in. Children under the age of 16 attending the event must be accompanied by an adult. \nThis is the 6th year that the Waco-McLennan County Library has spearheaded the collaborative effort to organize\, provide and share programs remotely via live webinars with libraries and genealogy societies across the state of Texas. \nProgramming includes something for everyone: \n\n(Noon-1:30pm) Genealogy 101: How to Get Started in Locating Your Ancestors: Beginning with how to fill out your Family Tree Chart\, you will get the basic skills and strategies for locating your family. This program will cover the Spanish Collection; various land grants -bounty and donation\, headright\, scrip certificates and more; and a look at the Archive Map Collection.\nKevin Klaus\, Information Specialist\, Texas General Land Office Archives and Records\n(4:00pm-5:10pm) Introduction to Hispanic Genealogy Research: This presentation will cover the basic research process and how to use it to start finding ancestors in Hispanic records. A case study will show how records (church and civil) can help build a family pedigree.\nMichael Provard\, Events Coordinator\, FamilySearch\n(6:10pm-7:20pm) DNA Testing: What is it\, what do the results mean\, and how do I understand it all? Confused about DNA and genetic genealogy or do not know where to begin? This session will provide an easy to follow guide to help to demystify DNA.\nRandy W. Whited\, President\, Texas State Genealogical Society\n(7:30pm-8:30pm) Finding Your Slave Ancestors: This class will teach participants three strategies to locate their enslaved ancestors. DESCRIPTION:Join the University of North Texas Libraries and Texas Archive of the Moving Image for the opportunity to turn your family history into community history! \nIn our National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)-funded project\, the Spotlight on North Texas\, we will be digitizing materials related to Denton County’s motion picture history including your home movies\, local and regional films\, photographs\, advertisements\, etc. A selection of this content will be made available on the Portal to Texas History and Texas Archive of the Moving Image’s online archive for future generations to appreciate and study. \nTo qualify for free digitization\, films and videotapes must: \n\nBe one of the following formats: Film (Super 8\, 8mm\, and 16mm films) or Video (VHS\, VHS-C\, SVHS\, Beta SP\, ¾” U-matic\, Hi-8\,\n8mm\, MiniDV)\nBe filmed in Texas\, filmed by a Texan\, or featured Texas or Texans.\nBe in the public domain OR submitted by the copyright holder\, who grants permissions for the items to be shared by TAMI and UNT.\nTotal no more than 20 reels of film and no more than 5 videotapes per household.\n\nTo qualify for free digitization\, documents must: \n\nDocument the motion picture history of Denton County.\nTotal no more than 25 items per household.\nBe in the public domain OR submitted by the copyright holder\, who grants permissions for the items to be shared by TAMI and UNT.\n\nOn the day of the event\, UNT Digital Projects staff will digitize your documents\, return the originals\, and provide a free digital copy on a flash-drive. She is a lecturer\, educator and writer who enjoys helping others understand a wide variety of genealogical issues\, including the interplay between genealogy and the law. \nJudy will be presenting four sessions:  \n\nFrom Blackstone to the Statutes at Large – How Knowing the Law Makes Us Better Genealogists\nDon’t Forget the Ladies” – A Genealogist’s Guide to Women and the Law\nThrough the Golden Door: Immigration After the Civil War\nThe Ethical Genealogist\n\nJudy will be speaking on the following topics. \n\nFrom Blackstone to the Statutes at Large – How Knowing the Law Makes Us Better Genealogists. To understand our ancestors’ lives – why they did what they did\, we need to understand the law that governed their lives in so many ways. Learn how knowing the law our ancestors lived by helps us make sense of the records they left and find clues to more and different records\nDon’t Forget the Ladies – A Genealogist’s Guide to Women and the Law. In early America\, women were all too often the people who just weren’t there: not in the records\, not in the censuses\, not on juries\, not in the voting booth. The common law relegated women to “protected” – second-class –status and understanding how they were treated under the law provides clues to finding their identities today\nThrough the Golden Door: Immigration After the Civil War. America’s doors were open to all before the Civil War\, with few restrictions. Afterwards\, the laws began tightening\, with exclusions\, quotas\, even required visas. How did the immigration laws affect your ancestors who immigrated after the Civil War? What hoops did they have to jump through to enter America’s “golden door”?\nThe Ethical Genealogist. Genealogists deal with sensitive issues all the time: how to handle family secrets\, what to say about living people\, crediting the work of others. Learn more about the ethical challenges of trying to solve family history mysteries in the 21st century\n\nSchedule and Location \nThis event will be held at the Dallas Public Library: J.
