SUMMARY:Dallas Genealogical Society 2014 Fall Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The Dallas Genealogical Society invites you to join us for a one‐day workshop featuring Judy Russell\, a Certified Genealogist and Certified Genealogical Lecturer with a law degree. She is a lecturer\, educator and writer who enjoys helping others understand a wide variety of genealogical issues\, including the interplay between genealogy and the law. \nJudy will be presenting four sessions:  \n\nFrom Blackstone to the Statutes at Large – How Knowing the Law Makes Us Better Genealogists\nDon’t Forget the Ladies” – A Genealogist’s Guide to Women and the Law\nThrough the Golden Door: Immigration After the Civil War\nThe Ethical Genealogist\n\nJudy will be speaking on the following topics. \n\nFrom Blackstone to the Statutes at Large – How Knowing the Law Makes Us Better Genealogists. To understand our ancestors’ lives – why they did what they did\, we need to understand the law that governed their lives in so many ways. Learn how knowing the law our ancestors lived by helps us make sense of the records they left and find clues to more and different records\nDon’t Forget the Ladies – A Genealogist’s Guide to Women and the Law. In early America\, women were all too often the people who just weren’t there: not in the records\, not in the censuses\, not on juries\, not in the voting booth. The common law relegated women to “protected” – second-class –status and understanding how they were treated under the law provides clues to finding their identities today\nThrough the Golden Door: Immigration After the Civil War. America’s doors were open to all before the Civil War\, with few restrictions. Afterwards\, the laws began tightening\, with exclusions\, quotas\, even required visas. How did the immigration laws affect your ancestors who immigrated after the Civil War? What hoops did they have to jump through to enter America’s “golden door”?\nThe Ethical Genealogist. Genealogists deal with sensitive issues all the time: how to handle family secrets\, what to say about living people\, crediting the work of others. Learn more about the ethical challenges of trying to solve family history mysteries in the 21st century\n\nSchedule and Location \nThis event will be held at the Dallas Public Library: J. Erik Jonsson Central Library 1515 Young Street Dallas\, TX (Directions\, Web page) \n\nRegistration: 9:30 a.m.\nWorkshop: 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.\nLunch: NOT PROVIDED due to renovations being performed at the library. The lunch break will be 90 minutes and you will be provided with a list of local restaurants. Limited space will be available at the library on a first come – first seated basis for those who may want to bring a lunch.\nParking: $1.50 (Discounted fee)\n\n\nCost \n\nOn or before September 6:\n\n$40 (Member)\n$50 (Non-Member)\n\n\nAfter September 6:\n\n$50 (Member)\n$60 (Non-Member)\n\n\n\nFor more information about online registration\, please visit Dallas Genealogical Society’s website.

People no longer have to rely solely on historical documents and family lore to trace their heritage and fill in gaps in their heritage. DNA testing for the purposes of genealogy has allowed for people to understand more clearly from where they came\, to whom they are related\, and what their overall ethnic makeup is. It has connected the entire world as one large genealogical community. Balkin will help explain\, in layman’s terms\, what getting tested involves\, how the science behind the testing works\, and how one can discover their own ancestry more clearly through a simple cheek swab.  \nJeremy Balkin is an Information Specialist and mans his place in the pantheon of Family Tree DNA’s Help Desk. He interprets genetic ancestral results for the expanding customer base\, and is one of the voices that one will hear when calling FTDNA. One may find his signature on their email queries as well. Balkin graduated from the University of Houston with a B. A. in History and a minor in Communication. \nWhile Jeremy Balkin is relatively newcomer to the relatively new field of genetic genealogy\, he has been able to fuse his communication studies with his knowledge of history to provide ancestral analysis that anybody can understand. He learned from his personal Family Tree DNA Y-DNA test that his direct paternal line is essentially Eastern European as well as heavily laden with Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. His Family Finder  myOrigins results show that he is 88% Jewish Diaspora\, 7% European and 4% Middle Eastern. \nAside from his work at FTDNA\, Balkin is passionate about communications. He is a professional photographer as well as a professional writer. His photography has appeared in several publications\, and he still photographs weddings and special events. As a “recovering” stand-up comedian\, he tries his best to maintain his comic edge through a blog on which he is a staff writer. \nThe mission of Clayton Library Friends (CLF) is to enrich the resources and facilities of Clayton Library\, Center for Genealogical Research – a Special Collections unit of the Houston Public Library. Clayton Library is one of the top genealogical libraries in the United States. In the pursuit of their mission\, the Executive Board of Clayton Library Friends\, in coordination with the manager of the Clayton Library\, organizes and directs projects to support the acquisition of research materials for the library\, to upgrade library facilities\, and to enhance library services. Since Clayton Library is primarily a family history and genealogical research center\, an important part of the Clayton Library Friends’ mission is the organization of programs that encourage family history research\, provide specialized volunteer services for the library\, and educate the public in the use of Clayton Library and its collections. \nThe General Meeting of the Clayton Library Friends will be held at Clayton Library located at 5300 Caroline which is located within Houston’s Museum District close to Hermann Park. There are four buildings on the property: the Main Building\, which houses the research collection; the historic Clayton House (an auxiliary research collection); the historic Carriage House and the historic Guest House which are used for meetings\, functions and seminars. When you drive into the parking lot\, the Main Building is located to the left while the historic houses are located to the right. The General Meeting will be held in the historic Clayton Carriage House\, which is the smaller building on the right and which is directly adjacent to the parking lot. \nFor more information about Clayton Library Friends’ programs\, activities\, membership and volunteer opportunities\, please go to their website at http://www.claytonlibraryfriends.org or Facebook page at http://m.facebook.com/ClaytonLibraryFriends?_rdr \nFor more information about Clayton Library\, Center for Genealogical Research\, please go to their website at http://www2.houstonlibrary.org/clayton or call (832) 393-2600.

SUMMARY:The Roots That Bind\, an African-American Genealogy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Roots That Bind\nAn African-American Genealogy Workshop\nSaturday\, February 15\, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.\nWest Waco Library & Genealogy Center\, 5301 Bosque Blvd. \n Pursuing your family history can be a labor of love.  The first steps for anyone pursuing family history are to learn what resources are available and how to use these resources to ensure success.  African-Americans\, though\, are faced with unique research challenges. They face the task of determining if descendants were freedmen or slaves\, using incomplete records\, and determining the identity of slaveholders and ancestors whose surnames may have changed multiple times in the years following the Civil War. \nTo assist those interested in researching their African-American ancestors\, the Genealogy Center of the Waco-McLennan County Library in cooperation with the Central Texas Genealogical Society is sponsoring “The Roots That Bind\, an African-American Genealogy Workshop” on Saturday\, February 15\, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the West Waco Library & Genealogy Center\, 5301 Bosque Blvd. Waco\, Texas. \nKeynote speaker Franklin Smith\, co-author of A Genealogist’s Guide to Discovering Your African-American Ancestors: How to Find and Record Your Unique Heritage will present three distinct programs during the day: \n\n“How to Get Started Tracing Your Family Tree” covers the basics for getting started\, including a look at the Freedman Bureau records.\n“Researching Pre-Civil War Slave Ancestors: Identifying the Slaveholder” includes tips and strategies for identifying the slaveholder using post-Civil War records.\n“Identifying and Locating Slaveholder Records and Documents” takes an in-depth look at various slave records.\n\nOther topics will include: \n\n“Protecting Your Future by Saving Your Past” with Vivian Rutherford of the Heart of Texas Storytelling Guild.  Ms. Rutherford will teach the importance of oral history and share hands-on tips and techniques for gathering your family’s story.\nEdith Smith\, co-author of the series ‘No Land\, Only Slaves!’\, will present “The Wow Factor: Celebrating the Excitement of Deeds.”  This program presents information about slaves found in deeds\, as well as the vast array of  information found in deeds\, from the common to the unusual\, that is useful in providing clues to discovering those elusive ancestors in your family trees. \nMary Evans will cap the day with “Connecting via Social Media.”  Ms. Evans will share how social media and online genealogy family connecting websites are useful tools in finding lost family members as well as staying in touch.  Learn how Geni.com\, Facebook\, and other online mediums can connect you to your family.\n\nThe Roots that Bind\, an African-American Genealogy Workshop\, is free to the public and open to anyone that has an interest in pursuing their family history.  We ask that those wishing to attend to pre-register by calling the Genealogy Center at 254-750-5945.  Onsite registration begins at 8:30 a.m.  Lunch will be on your own. \nFor more information call 254-750-5945 or contact Bill Buckner at e-mail: bbuckner@ci.waco.tx.us
