DESCRIPTION:The Waco-McLennan County Library Genealogy Center\, in cooperation with the Central Texas Genealogical Society\, will host the 19th Annual Genealogy Lock-In in celebration of Family History Month. This event is free\, open to the public\, and takes place Friday\, October 18\, from 10:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the West Waco Library & Genealogy Center (5301 Bosque Blvd). \nThis library event showcases the Library’s genealogy collection and provides access to and awareness of area hereditary and historical societies. This is a great opportunity for beginners and experts to pursue their family history and learn more about genealogy in general. Staff and volunteers will be available to help with your research. All library computers will be available for research. The Lock-in will also have snacks and door prizes! Lock-in programming will include: \n\nBeginners’ Class at noon (a Brown bag program)\nEight shared virtual programs from around the country\nHereditary and Historical Societies from around the state\nOne-on-one research help\n\nEarly registration for the Lock-in begins at 9:30 a.m. in the foyer at the West Waco Library & Genealogy Center. Other library facilities will not be available for use after 6:00 p.m. during the Lock-in.  Children under the age of 16 attending the event must be accompanied by an adult. DESCRIPTION:The Bay Area Genealogical Society in Houston\, Texas announces a special program to be presented on Friday\, May 31\, 2019 at 6:30 pm \nSpeakers: League City Police Department representatives and genealogist Shera Lapoint will discuss the genealogy and DNA research performed to determine the identities of the victims in the Jane Doe and Janet Doe unsolved murder cases. \nMeetings are held at University Baptist Church (UBC)\n16106 Middlebrook Drive\nHouston\, TX 77059 (Clear Lake City) \nMeet in the Chapel on the 1st Floor in UBC\, 6:30 pm for socializing and the meeting begins at 7 pm \nUsing the genetic genealogy of Jane Doe and Janet Doe\, investigators meticulously constructed family trees and DNA profiles and compared them against databases at Gedmatch.com\, Ancestry.com and FamilyTreeDNA.com. With those matches\, they identified and found family members of the two victims that were found on Calder Road in League City. \nDetectives were able to identify and locate living family members from both victims. DNA samples were collected from the son and sister of Janet Doe\, and Agents from the FBI coordinated the collection from the family members of Jane Doe who were out of state. \nIn a video about the case\, League City Police urged people whose loved ones are missing to submit DNA to databases. Slansky\, Frank Dulak\, Cecil Dobecka – Will assist you in researching your ancestors using the Czech Archives (Matriky) for Bohemia and Moravia.  \nHelmuth Schneider – Will help you to locate ancestral homes on the Stable Cadastral Maps of Czechia. You will be provided the website of the Stable Cadastral Map for each of your Villages.  The Maps are on the Internet and FREE.  You will be able to save the Maps in Bookmarks or Favorites for use in the future. \nDanny Leshikar\, Richard Lesikar – (in attendance only on Friday\, April 12) – will teach you how to properly scan\, edit\, label\, repair\, or touch up your family photos and save them digitally to a hard drive.  Bring your photos and a flash drive on which to store the digitized images. \nDoug Kubicek – Will help date your old photographs. Bring your old photos and let Doug date them for you. \nCarroll Brincefield – Historian – Let Carroll assist you in understanding how the unique Texas-Czech culture and traditions influenced the lives of your ancestors. \nArnold Pechal – An experienced TCGS researcher knowledgeable about the Czech Lands able to assist you with finding your ancestral information in books from the TCGS library.  Skilled in Czech translations.   \nFrank Kalbac – Will assist you in your research through the use of the Master Surname Index and the TCGS Website. \nRosemary Ermis – Researcher – 35 years of experience and author of numerous books\, will share tips on using ancestry.com\, searching obituary archives and suggest areas of research if you have reached a wall.  \nLeo Baca – Will be available to help you understand your DNA test results\, guide you in searching for your ancestors on the immigrant ships passenger lists and help you to understand your Valachian history. \nHenry and Carolyn Holub – Czech translations.  Carolyn will assist you in negotiating the Portal to Texas History\, the archival site of many Texas-Czech publications\, and the Czech Language Site\, Český Jazykový Atlas\, that explores the geographic variations of non-written dialects in use in Bohemia\, Moravia and Silesia. \n Bring your laptops and a flash drive to copy and save material for later use\n Registration is $20 per person for one or both days. DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for the Cherokee County\, Texas\, Genealogical Society Spring Seminar. Brochures are available by contacting the society. The date is Saturday April 6\, 2019. The place is the meeting room of the Rusk Public Library (aka Singletary Memorial Library)\, 207 East 6th Street in Rusk\, Texas. Cost of the seminar is $15.00 to cover morning refreshments and a catered sandwich lunch.
