SUMMARY:Texas Czech Genealogical Society presents ...
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Centennial of the Founding of Czechoslovakia and the U.S. Czech Partnership\nThe September 29\, 2018 program will honor the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia\, the forging of the U.S. and Czech partnership and focus on the Texas Czechs who worked together during the “Great War” (WWI) years to help form a sovereign Czech country. \n\nCarolyn Loykasek Holub will speak about how the Czechs of Texas worked together during the World War I years in support of a sovereign Czech country; how they banded together under the Czech National Alliance to raise funds\, hold lectures by influential speakers and to publicize the plight of the Czech people living under the Austrian oppression. The TCGS publication\, 1618-1918 Pamatnik Cechoslovaku\, is a history of the Czech National Alliance Branches throughout Texas; originally published in 1920 as a tribute to the Czech and Moravian Texan who contributed to the liberation of the Czech lands during WWI. It includes 59 Czech National Alliance branches in Texas group photos with names (some birthplaces\, assigned divisions\, and battles fought) and by county of residence the names of Czech military men and women from Texas who served during WWI. \nLila Rakoczy Program Coordinator for the Texas Historical Commission Military sites and Oral History Program will speak on WWI and the impact on immigrants and immigrant communities. The Great War brought profound change to the Lone Star State. Dr. Rakoczy will highlight the impact the war had on its residents\, including thousands of Texans of central and eastern European descent. \nDotty Davis will discuss and present a video of Sergeant Stubby\, the official mascot of the 102nd Infantry Regiment during World War I. He served for 18 months and participated in seventeen battles on the Western Front. He saved his regiment from surprise mustard gas attacks\, found and comforted the wounded\, and once caught a German soldier by the seat of his pants\, holding him there until American soldiers found him. (Wikipedia) \nCarroll Brincefield currently involved in documenting the military history of Texas veterans\, directing an oral history program in Lavaca County\, and developing oral histories for the Texas State Historical Association will talk about the World War I Memorial Wall and Display Project at the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogical Center in Temple. \nA Silent Auction will be held and the TCGS Sales Table will be laden with authentic Czech items.
