Genealogy Essentials Series 2

When the Texas State Genealogical Society introduced Genealogy Essentials in 2025, the goal was clear: create an accessible, structured learning experience that would help researchers build a strong foundation for family history and make it available on a convenient schedule.

The response to Genealogy Essentials: Series 1 confirmed what many of us already suspected—genealogists at all levels are looking for more than isolated lectures. They want a guided path, one that connects concepts, builds skills over time, and helps them make sense of the records they find.

As a result, Genealogy Essentials is no longer just a single course offering. It is evolving into a series of coordinated learning experiences, each designed to build on the last.

A Flexible Learning Model That Works

At its core, Genealogy Essentials remains a series of pre-recorded educational sessions that participants can access on their own schedule. What makes the program distinctive is how those sessions work together.

Rather than standalone presentations, each series is intentionally designed as a cohesive course of study, combining multiple topics into a unified learning experience. Participants are encouraged not only to watch the sessions but also to apply, evaluate, and connect what they learn.

Building on that strong foundation, TxSGS launches Genealogy Essentials Series 2 which begins August 3, 2026. Registration opens June 15.

While Series 1 concentrates on the fundamentals, Series 2 moves researchers into the next phase: using records more effectively, thinking more critically, and beginning to interpret and communicate what they discover.

This is where research begins to shift from collecting information to understanding it.

Expanding the Research Toolbox

Genealogy Essentials  Series 2 introduces a set of topics that are central to advancing genealogical research. These include:

  • Researching Maiden Names, one of the most persistent challenges in family history
  • Land Records, which help establish location, relationships, and economic context
  • Advanced Census Strategies, including lesser-used schedules and state-level records
  • Maps and Migration, placing ancestors in geographic and historical context
  • Probate Records, among the richest and most revealing sources available
  • Writing Your Research, transforming documents into meaningful conclusions

Together, these topics reflect a deliberate shift—from finding records to understanding and using them effectively. Learn more about Genealogy Essentials Series 2 topics and objectives.

Who Should Consider Series 2?

While Series 1 is designed with beginners in mind,  Series 2 is ideal for:

  • Researchers who have completed basic coursework
  • Individuals who have gathered records but want to make better use of them
  • Anyone looking to strengthen their analytical and problem-solving skills

In practice, many genealogists will find that Series 2 serves as a natural bridge between learning the basics and doing meaningful research. If you are just beginning your research, Series 1 is for you. If you have been researching for a while and have experience using vital records, census records, and other resources, then Series 2 may be just for you’re looking for to take your research to the next level.

A Program Designed to Grow

The long-term vision for Genealogy Essentials is to offer a series of coordinated learning experiences that researchers can engage with over time. Each series stands on its own, but together they form a broader pathway for developing genealogical skill and confidence.

As additional series are developed, participants will be able to continue building on what they have learned—moving from foundational knowledge to more advanced research techniques.
