Episode #120 – Harrison County Historical Museum

Harrison County Historical Museum and Inez Hatley Hughes Historical Research Center

Host: Sue Kaufman

Guest: Tina McGuffin, Executive Director

In this episode of Lone Star Family Trails, host Sue Kaufman speaks with Tina McGuffin, Executive Director of the Harrison County Historical Museum and the Inez Hatley Hughes Historical Research Center in Marshall, Texas. Tina shares how these institutions play a vital role in preserving the rich history of Harrison County and supporting research for genealogists, historians, and the general public.

Guided by the principle that we are “collecting and preserving for the grandchildren of our grandchildren,” Tina discusses the ongoing efforts to digitize the center’s vast collections to ensure long-term accessibility.

Highlights of the episode include:

  • The Star Plant Collection – A remarkable set of land abstracts created by land agents before 1916. With over 65,000 pages, this collection is currently being digitized and will be available online in the future.
  • New Harrison County Cemetery Maps – Recently acquired and extremely useful for locating burial sites and hard-to-find tombstones.

If you have roots in Harrison County, Texas, this episode—and a visit to these institutions—should be at the top of your research list.
