Session information:

Black and White Families in Southern Plantation Records
Southern antebellum plantation records can offer valuable insights into both white and African American families. This session explores how these records are organized, how to search them, and how to use correspondence, business papers, and other documents to uncover family connections and historical context. Case studies will show how the records document a white Southern family directly and an African American family indirectly.

Mysterious Relatives
Who is that unknown person in the household, or the “cousin” signing a family letter? This session looks at how cluster research can help identify mysterious people and clarify their relationship to your family.

Reconstructing Communities Using Sanborn Maps, Census Records, and City Directories
Reconstructing neighborhoods can reveal rich details about an ancestor’s daily life and surroundings. This session demonstrates how to use Sanborn maps, census records, and city directories to rebuild communities in Google Maps.

Sources for Researching Rural Ancestors
Did your ancestor come from a small town or unincorporated community? This session covers records and tools for researching rural families, including census and land records, maps, rural directories, newspapers, and modern mapping methods.
