Our latest episode of Lone Star Family Trails takes listeners inside one of Texas’s most valuable repositories for Jewish family and community history—the Dallas Jewish Historical Society.
Host Emily Richardson welcomes Beri Kaplan Schwitzer for a conversation about the Society’s mission to preserve and share the stories of the Jewish community in Dallas. Through the collection and preservation of documents, photographs, oral histories, and other historical materials, the Society helps ensure that these stories remain available for future generations.
The Society operates as an archive “without walls,” combining traditional preservation in a climate-controlled vault with ongoing digitization efforts that make records more accessible to researchers. One of its most significant projects is the digitization of more than 1,100 oral histories, which will soon be available through a new online platform.
Listeners will learn about the many resources available to researchers, including cemetery records, city directories, congregational histories, photographs, and family collections. These materials provide valuable insight into the lives, migrations, and experiences of Jewish families who helped shape Dallas and North Texas.
If you have Jewish ancestors who lived in Dallas—or simply enjoy discovering the stories behind local communities—you won’t want to miss this fascinating conversation.
