TxSGS Board of Directors

TxSGS is governed by the Board of Directors and managed by the Executive Committee. The Board of Directors consists of elected Officers, elected District Representatives, Committee Chairs and appointments to the Board of Directors. As their authority is directly derived from the membership, the only voting members of the Executive Committee and the Board are the elected Officers and the elected District Representatives as specified below.

Board responsibilities: The Board manages the business and financial affairs of the TxSGS. Each Director must participate in at least two Board meetings annually, be available by mail or electronic communication throughout the year, serve as a chair or member of a standing or special committee, and promote the TxSGS as necessary.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee supervises TxSGS’ activities and has full authority to direct its operations between the annual Business Meetings of the general membership. The EC consists of the following elected officers:

President  
Incumbent: Susan E. Ball
Current term ends Dec 31, 2024

The President presides at meetings of the Membership, Board of Directors and the Executive Committee; has general charge and supervision of the affairs of TxSGS; chairs the Planning Committee; appoints all Committee Chairs with the consent of the Executive Committee; is an ex officio member of all committees except the Nominating Committee; monitors records preservation and access for the Executive Committee; and performs such duties associated with the office as may be assigned by the Board.

Director of Education
Incumbent: Susan Kaufman
Current term ends Dec 31, 2024

The Director for Education has overall responsibility for the educational activities of the Society; monitors awards and recognition programs; monitors annual conference and other educational event planning, and performs other duties as assigned by the President and the Board.

Membership
Incumbent: Tony Hanson
Current term ends December 31, 2024

The Director for Membership has overall responsibility for the membership activities of TxSGS; chairs the Membership Committee; manages Individual, Household, and Partner Society Membership support; represents the District Representatives on the Executive Committee, including training and reporting to and from District Representatives; and performs other duties as assigned by the President and the Board.

Development
Incumbent: Sandra Crowley
Current term ends December 31, 2025

The Director for Development is responsible for the fundraising and technological activities of TxSGS; chairs the Development, Technology and Publications Committees; manages fundraising programs, and performs other duties as assigned by the President and the Board.

Secretary
Incumbent: Laura Douglas
Current term ends December 31, 2025

The Secretary takes, publishes, and obtains approval of TxSGS Board, Executive Committee, Membership, Annual Business Meeting, and any special meetings called by the Board; conducts general correspondence for TxSGS; represents the Archivist-Historian on the Executive Committee; maintains the official active records of TxSGS; and performs other duties as assigned by the President and the Board.

Treasurer
Incumbent: Betsy Mills
Current term ends December 31, 2025

The Treasurer has custody of all funds and securities of TxSGS and receives monies due and payable; deposits such monies in the name of TxSGS in banks or depositories as approved by the Executive Committee; maintains the financial records of TxSGS for inspection by the Financial Review Committee; submits financial statements and reports to the President prior to each Board and Annual Meeting and to the Financial Review Committee; monitors sales and inventory; and performs other duties as assigned by the President and the Board.

Director-at-Large
Incumbent: Emily Coffman Richardson
Current term end December 31, 2025

The Director-at-Large serves as an advisor and consultant to the President and other Officers in carrying out the activities of the Society and shall be a non-voting member of the Board of Directors. At the request of the President, he or she may preside over special meetings, advisory boards, or committees. 

District Representatives

District Representatives (DRs) represent TxSGS within his or her district in which he or she lives; actively solicit membership; contact each society in their district; assist genealogical organizations to find needed assistance as may be requested by these organizations; answer correspondence from researchers that pertains to their respective district.

DRs may not serve more than five consecutive terms, i.e., ten years. They are, however, eligible for nomination to other elected offices or appointed positions and may serve on committees. Representatives are eligible to receive an annual allowance for administrative purposes, travel within their districts, and other TxSGS related activities.

Term of Office

Elected members of the Board of Directors serve for a two-year term beginning on the January 1 immediately following the election.

The President, the Director of Education, the Director of Membership, and even-numbered District Representatives shall be elected in even-numbered years. See Leadership for “term expires” date.

The Director of Development, the Secretary, the Treasurer, and odd-numbered District Representatives shall be elected in odd-numbered years. See Leadership for “term expires” date. 

Appointed members of the Board of Directors shall serve for a one-year term, or at the pleasure of the President. See Leadership for “term expires” date.
