TxSGS Launches Lone Star Family Trails Podcast

TXSGS is excited to announce our podcast: Lone Star Family Trails!  The goal of the podcast is to introduce our listeners to resources, records, and the historical context of the Lone Star State: Texas.  Each podcast will highlight one specific element that adds to your genealogical knowledge when researching your Texas ancestors.  A host will interview an expert guest during the podcast.  In addition, the podcast will bring listeners up-to-date information on the happenings of the Texas State Genealogical Society. A corresponding blog regarding each episode will be posted on the TXSGS website with additional information for your reference.

Hosts for this series are Sue Kaufman, Randy Whited, and Ron Barnett.  Each one has a wealth of genealogical experience in Texas and will bring that background to their hosting responsibilities.

Listen now to:  Episode #101 – The Texas Collection and University Archives at Baylor University.

Host:    Ron Barnett

Guest:  Amie Oliver: Interim Director of the Texas Collection and an assistant librarian

This episode features the Texas Collection and University Archives at Baylor University in Waco.  Celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2023, this large privately held collection is used by historians, filmmakers, journalists, students, and genealogists from across the world.

Key collections of interest to the family genealogists include:

    1. Regional Historical Resource Depository (RHRD) microfilm which contain birth, marriage, death, deeds, land, tax, etc. for a select group of Texas counties.
    2. The Biographical Gazetteer of Texas (BIO-GAZ) a searchable resource of biographical sketches of Texas citizens.
    3. The map collection with over 14,000 maps focused on Waco and historical Texas maps.
    4. The cookbook collection containing 8,500 cookbooks that include those from individual families to those produced by organizations.

All of these collections are discussed on the podcast, and more information on the kinds of documents that are available are highlighted.  The library is open to the public; however, the stacks are closed. Individuals who wish to research these materials should contact the library ahead of the visit so they can help the genealogist make the most of their time at the library.  Amie recommended that individuals contact her directly if they have more questions after researching their online catalog.
