Listen now to:  Episode #102 – The San Antonio Genealogical and Historical Society Library.

Host:    Sue Kaufman

Guest:  Barbara Froebel, President and Historian of the San Antonio Genealogical and Historical Society

This episode features the library of the San Antonio Genealogical and Historical Society (SAGHS). Containing more than 15,000 books and 700 maps, the library is an important destination for Texas researchers. In addition to Texana, U.S. and international holdings, maps, and more, researchers have access to a multitude of online resources when visiting the library.

Key collections for the family genealogist include:

    • The Texas Room, which houses Texas county research books along with published family genealogies
    • Genealogical research books for all states, with emphasis on Virginia, Ohio, and Tennessee
    • Digitized Surname files, available on the library’s computers and also in vertical files. Surnames included in the vertical files are listed on the SAGHS website.
    • A map collection of over 700 maps
    • Computer access to Ancestry.com, Fold3.com, HistoryGeo, the New England Historic Genealogical Society (American Ancestors), the Ohio Genealogical Society, and the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society
    • Obituary and cemetery records for the San Antonio area

The library is situated in an historic Spanish colonial revival house in central San Antonio. It is open four days each week, including both Saturday and Sunday. The stacks are open for browsing.  Individuals can contact the Research Registrar who helps with research requests via the SAGHS library’s website.

The San Antonio Genealogical and Historical Society, chartered in 1959, conducts monthly meetings with speakers in person and via zoom, as well as classes and workshops. They produce Our Heritage, an award-winning publication, as well as 33 society-published books that cover records in San Antonio and Bexar County. SAGHS also recognizes descendants of Bexar County, in 1850 and before, through their First Families Program.
