Episode #107 – Houston Public Library – Family History Research Center at the Clayton Library Campus

Houston Public Library – Family History Research Center at the Clayton Library Campus

Host: Randy Whited    Guest: Sue Kaufman, Senior Manager, Clayton Library Campus

Episode #107 introduces the listener to the collection at the Family History Research Center at the Clayton Library Campus, part of the Houston Public Library system. Clayton holds an international collection of family history research including books, microfilm, and online sources. Their typical patron is the genealogist or family historian who is looking for help in finding their relatives. As a bonus, Sue provides a quick introduction to the Texas State Genealogical Society Family History Conference beginning on November 4, 2022.

Sue has spent over 35 years as a genealogical librarian, although her own family history is only 3rd generation American. Her strength is in 20th century research with a background in sociology and helping others tell their family stories. As part of Clayton’s experienced staff, she does not hesitate to work one-on-one with the visitor, offering recommendations on accomplishing their research goals while at the facility. The library offers research guides and learning events to aid those looking for information.

This episode also focuses on the discussion education for anyone researching their ancestry. Whether a beginner or an experienced professional, education leads to understanding the potential record sets that genealogists utilize to find additional information about their ancestors. The Texas State Genealogical Society offers a family history conference as part of its mission to provide education to the genealogical community. The 2022 TxSGS Family History Conference features TxSGS Live!, on November 4-5, with ten speakers including live question and answer time. Plus, 42 additional sessions are available for replay through February 6, 2023. Sue and Randy discussed multiple reasons and ideas why one should take the time to listen and learn.
